2023 Overtakes Championship
Perez is 2023’s ‘Overtakes Champion’ with 95 overtakes. Alonso was 2022 Champion. Perez was also 2021 champion (Not Vettel, F1 used inaccurate data). Albon 2020 Champion. Below is the top 5 of 2023:
- Perez – 95
- Russell – 76
- Hamilton – 66
- Norris – 65
- Verstappen – 65
These totals do not include Sprints to keep consistency with previous years. Perez would still be champion if Sprints were included.
Bottas did the least amount of overtakes of full time drivers this season with 23.
2023 Most Overtaken Championship
Bottas is 2023’s most overtaken driver being overtaken 104 times. Mick Schumacher was most overtaken in 2022. Russell in 2021 and Magnussen in 2020. Below is the top 5 of 2023:
- Bottas – 104
- Hulkenberg – 100
- Magnussen – 95
- Zhou – 82
- Tsunoda – 72
Likewise these totals do not include Sprints nonetheless Bottas would still be first if Sprints were included.
Verstappen was the least overtaken driver this season being overtaken only 5 times. 4 times in Singapore and once by Leclerc in Las Vegas. This is not a record though as Schumacher in 1994, Coulthard in 1998 and Montoya in 2005 all went the full season without being overtaken.
Quick Analysis
2023 saw a steady increase in the amount of overtakes despite maybe not feeling that way with Max Verstappens dominance. Midfield action really carried this season. This years overtaking totals are slightly flattered by an enormous outlier event which was the crazy record breaking Dutch GP. Without this race the season average 43 overtakes which is significantly less but still a respectable figure. Overtaking numbers have improved with the 2022 regulation changes but that doesn’t necessarily mean more entertaining racing. With 1 team and 1 driver being so dominant this season any set of regulations would struggle.

Thank you to everyone who has followed this project throughout this season. I put a lot of effort into making this data as accurate as possible and I appreciate all the positive feedback I get. This season saw a big change from simply posting the data to reddit to having a dedicated website. I’ve been a bit too busy in real life recently but hopefully over the winter I’ll be able to do some updates and improvements to the website as well as get a few additional posts written over the winter break. I fully intend to be back in March next year to do 2024’s overtaking data.
