The 2024 Emilia-Romagna GP had 30 overtakes, 21 of these were shown in the live broadcast. The 2022 race had 23 overtakes, 2021 had 42 and 2020 had 10. This is the highest overtake total at Imola in a dry race since 1990, although it probably didn’t feel like that at all. The average on the old Imola circuit between 1995 and 2006 was just 8.

This is a race that proves the point that number of overtakes does not always mean an entertaining race. The vast majority of overtakes were comfortable DRS moves between cars with big differences in tyre age. These rarely make for engaging battles and are not really acknowledged when watching the race. It is also noteworthy that there was only one overtake in the first 23 laps.

• Stroll has the most overtakes this season with 27 followed by Perez with 22 and Piastri with 18
• Ocon is the most overtaken driver this season with 29 followed by Hulkenberg with 25 and Magnussen/Gasly both with 20
• Perez was overtaken for the first time this season. Every driver on the grid has now been overtaken at least once.

Remember Overtaking data is just interesting data. It largely tells you how easy overtaking is in a given race not how entertaining the race is. Generally races with more overtaking are more entertaining but this is definitely not a rule. Baku 2016 had 80 overtakes and was a very dull race, Japan 2005 had 15 overtakes and was one of the best races ever.
