Belgian GP had 33 Overtakes. Half of Last Year’s Total.

Ocon Most Overtakes with 7

The 2024 Belgian GP had 33 Overtakes, 22 of which were shown in the live broadcast. This is less than half of last years total which was 75 overtakes, the 2022 event had 74, 2021 had 0 and 2020 had 32. The circuit average in the hybrid era is 51 (ignoring the 2021 farce).

This years race had much less overtakes than the last two events at Spa but was probably the much more entertaining race. This race had a genuine fight for the win and engaging strategy throughout. The smaller DRS zone into Les Combes along with a tail wind also meant overtakes weren’t just easy highway passes. Drivers had to fight the car infront applying pressure throughout the lap rather than just sitting back waiting for the Kemmel straight then pushing a button and breezing past.

Rules

Only on track passes for position count (Positions gained due to cars pitting/ off track or spun/ major reliability issues do not count)

Likewise lapping and unlapping do not count as overtakes

Overtakes on Lap 1 do not count (See FAQ’s section for a detailed explanation)

Remember Overtaking data is just interesting data. It largely tells you how easy overtaking is in a given race not how entertaining the race is. Generally races with more overtaking are more entertaining but this is definitely not a rule. Baku 2016 had 80 overtakes and was a very dull race, Japan 2005 had 15 overtakes and was one of the best races ever.

Please see the rules and FAQ’s sections for more info on how this data is put together.
