Quick Analysis

While it was no doubt refreshing to see a different winner it has to be said that the race itself wasn’t that exciting. With no-one at the front being brave enough to venture far from the optimum strategy most drivers finishing positions were fairly obvious early on in the race. This is the third race at Albert Park since the circuit was redesigned. It’s definitely an improvement in my opinion with turn 9 becoming a very good overtaking opportunity which in turn has made turn 11 a better opportunity as well. I think the DRS Zone between T10 and 11 needs its own detection point as it benefits drivers who made a move in T9 too much. Just 12 of the 24 overtakes were shown on the TV Broadcast which as a bit of a poor showing in my view. We missed Alonso overtaking Sainz for the lead around the outside of Turn 2 when Sainz left the pits aswell as Gasly losing multiple positions in a few laps on very worn tyres. Gasly is now the only driver yet to make a single overtake this season. Verstappen was overtaken for the first time this season, despite the brake issue the overtake by Sainz still counted because Verstappen’s pace was still competitive. This means that Perez and Sargeant are the only drivers who have not been overtaken this season.

Numbers for the Season so far

Rules

Only on track passes for position count (Positions gained due to cars pitting/ off track or spun/ major reliability issues do not count)

Likewise lapping and unlapping do not count as overtakes

Overtakes on Lap 1 do not count (See FAQ’s section for a detailed explanation)

Remember Overtaking data is just interesting data. It largely tells you how easy overtaking is in a given race not how entertaining the race is. Generally races with more overtaking are more entertaining but this is definitely not a rule. Baku 2016 had 80 overtakes and was a very dull race, Japan 2005 had 15 overtakes and was one of the best races ever.

Please see the rules and FAQ’s sections for more info on how this data is put together.
