Monaco GP had 4 Overtakes. Lowest Total Since 2021.

The 2024 Monaco GP had just 4 Overtakes. All 4 of these were shown in the broadcast although only as replays. Last years race had 22 overtakes and 2022 had 13 both those events were affected by rain. This years race is much more in line with previous dry Monaco races, 2021 had 0 overtakes, 2019 had 2 overtakes, 2018 had 4 and 2017 had 3 overtakes. This race had the lowest overtake total since the farcical 2021 Belgian GP which had zero or 2021 Monaco for an actual race.

The low amount of overtakes in this race is very typical of a dry Monaco race. This race was not helped by the lap 1 chaos which both removed 4 cars from the race but also made it effectively a zero stop race. With hardly any strategy happening it made this year’s Monaco race even more of a parade than it normally is. The race also showed higher tyre degradation will not work to help Monaco, track position is king and drivers will just go slower. Russell was a clear example of this. Short of radical circuit redesign the best suggestion I have is to consider the tyre rules used last year in Qatar. It might not help overtaking too much but at least drivers will be forced to push and we won’t have to watch F1 cars pootle about at F2 speeds.

Remember Overtaking data is just interesting data. It largely tells you how easy overtaking is in a given race not how entertaining the race is. Generally races with more overtaking are more entertaining but this is definitely not a rule. Baku 2016 had 80 overtakes and was a very dull race, Japan 2005 had 15 overtakes and was one of the best races ever.

Please see the rules and FAQ’s sections for more info on how this data is put together.
